Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine turns at 15 most Memorable Covers -PHOTOS

May 2015: The 15th anniversary issue is the only O Magazine cover ever printed in black and white. “Oprah is an icon, and it should be an iconic moment,” says Glassman, who dressed Winfrey in an affordable navy gown that he customized with Swarovski crystals. “Crystal is the traditional gift you give people for their 15th anniversary.”

April 2005: The busier cover teases a healthier you and confessions of a sex kitten. “We call this the ode to Oscar de la Renta,” says Glassman. “She’s in a flirty little kicky white and orange skirt that Oscar designed for us. She loves this skirt.”

December 2014: The holiday “Favorite Things” issues are one of Winfrey’s guilty pleasures. “If you look through all 15 years, there’s only a handful of times that we see Oprah this close-up on the magazine cover,” says Glassman, “so this is a very special one.”

September 2013: Winfrey dons a 31/2-pound Afro for her “Let’s Talk About Hair!” issue. “We really didn’t go into it thinking we had created an iconic image,” says Glassman, “but it struck a nerve, and it began a conversation with women all around the world about natural hair.”

February 2012: The “Express Yourself” issue reveals Winfrey flashing a come-hither stare. “She did a great job. That was a new pose,” says Glassman. “She loves clothes that are pretty and feminine, and we’re all about a lot of bright, happy, inviting color.”

July 2011: The “Summer Bliss” cover shows Winfrey sprawled on the grass with her four dogs. “This is the real and authentic Oprah right here,” says Glassman. “If people want a behind-the-scenes look into Oprah’s personal life ... this is Oprah.”

July 2010: Winfrey pushes her summer reading list while swinging in a hammock. “This is when her show was about to go off the air, and Oprah said, ‘This is what I want to do for a few months: I want to be reading my books on a hammock, looking at the trees and the sky,’ ” recalls Glassman.

December 2013: Winfrey “sort of” shares the holiday cover with Jimmy Kimmel while modeling custom Vera Wang. “I kept envisioning a very long train that went beyond one cover and two covers, and sort of trailed into three covers,” says Glassman, “and we needed Jimmy to be on that third (inside) flap to pretend that he was finishing up sewing it.”

September 2002: Winfrey “dreams big” before the Chrysler Building one year after 9/11. “It was a nod to New York, and how much we had all grown and changed and moved on in a year, and to never forget,” says Glassman.

July 2002: Winfrey saddles up for the “Adventure” cover like a pro. “No one believed she was really riding that horse,” laughs Glassman. “But she hit her mark every time ... and within five minutes we had that shot.”

December 2009: Winfrey shares the spotlight again after Ellen DeGeneres campaigns for it. “She kept sending us funny little renditions of herself on the cover, and one day I was like, let’s do it,” says Glassman. “It was hilarious.”

April 2009: Winfrey’s interview with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House was so momentous that she shared the cover — another first. “Even Oprah was a little bit nervous!” says Glassman. “That was the first shoot that the new administration had done in the White House, right after the inauguration.”

June 2000: The first issue keeps things simple with few cover lines. Winfrey now admits to Glassman that, “We were so proud of that cover, we loved it ... but looking back on it, did I just take that sweater off the floor?” She now polishes her look.

June 2005: This “Ah, Men!” issue didn’t just decode dudes — it introduced the world to Tory Burch, whose turquoise tunic Winfrey is wearing. “That is the cover that started Tory Burch’s business,” says Glassman. “After that, Oprah had her on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ and Tory became a household name.”

September 2005: Winfrey loves this portrait of herself wearing a chic Donna Karan dress so much that Glassman says she still uses it for promotional purposes. “She just looks so relaxed and easy-breezy,” he says. This was her fourth shoot of the day, and they grabbed the natural light.
