It's exactly the movie they're looking for.
Early reviews for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" were overwhelmingly
positive after Saturday night's premiere in Los Angeles, with critics
and viewers alike rushing to social media to declare the highly
anticipated film is out of this world.
"#RogueOne is FANTASTIC," tweeted
IGN editor Terri Schwartz. "Incredible action, both planetary and
interstellar, and looks GORGEOUS. Most importantly, it feels like Star
Wars."
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, meanwhile, took his praise one galaxy further in
likening "Rogue One" to the most iconic and celebrated chapter in the
sci-fi franchise.
"@RogueOneMovie is unbelievably wonderful!" he wrote. "No lie: it is #EmpireStrikesBack great! An excellent chapter in the @starwars Universe!"
Official reviews for "Rogue One" are embargoed until Tuesday, Dec. 13,
but the immediate social media reaction following the film's first
screening should leave "Star Wars" diehards excited enough to rip the
ears off a gundark.
The film — the first standalone in "Star Wars" history — centers on a
rag-tag group of rebels led by Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso who are tasked
with stealing the plans to the Empire's daunting superweapon, the Death
Star.
"Rogue One" is set shortly before the franchise's 1977 original film "A
New Hope" — and the new movie's creators apparently managed to give it
that same authentic "Star Wars" feel nearly 40 years later.
"Still reeling after #RogueOne premiere," Daily News film editor Ethan Sacks tweeted after the premiere. "Thank you to the filmmakers for recapturing magic I felt seeing @starwars for first time as 4-yr-old."
The movie even prompted viewers to break out and start clapping, according to Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr.
"I honestly don't think I've ever heard such enthusiastic applause," she wrote.
Suffice to say, fans should have a good feeling about this.
"Rogue One" soars into theaters on Dec. 16.
