NARROW ESCAPECouple, child escape death by whiskers

Mobile policeman battered, vehicle burnt
It was a narrow escape for an employee of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Mr. Daniel Sagay, his wife and child, after they were allegedly attacked by a retired Army General. But a mobile policeman attached to Mr. Sagay was not so lucky, as he was butchered by the thugs, who were said to be acting on the orders of a local government official, who is also a prominent member of the community where the victim comes from.

A GMC Explorer SUV, with the registration number, HQ570 EKY, belonging to the victims, was also set ablaze by the thugs. The retired soldier was alleged to have swooped on them at Ughevwhughe community, in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The couple, now in pains, has also raised alarm over alleged threat to their lives and those of the members of their families, by the military officer and top official of the Delta State government (names withheld).
The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Mr. Charles Muka, confirmed the attack on the policeman but said he was not aware that the life of Mr. Sagay was being threatened by some prominent indigenes of the community.
However, Mr. Sagay, who stormed The SUN office in Warri with his traumatized wife and son, insisted that their lives were in danger because of the threats by some faceless individuals, who he said, had vowed to make life unbearable form him, if he continued to seek justice. He said: “I have been forced to make this passionate plea to the world, because I am no longer safe; my wife and son are not safe either. We have abandoned our house because of the threat.

My wife, who was receiving treatment after the attack, had to be discharged from the hospital immediately.” “My son has been withdrawn from school, because our lives are in danger. I, the victim of the attack, is now being hounded and I am using this medium to appeal to well meaning individuals, security agencnies and the Delta State government, to wade into the matter to ensure that this act of terrorism is not allowed to go univestigated and unpunished.”

He explained that his efforts to get justice over the atack was being truncated by the perpetrators of the evil act, adding that even the police seemed helpless, in view of the overbearing influence of the perpetrators in the community. But the PPRO told Daily Sun that the police were investigating the incident, adding that the rifle gun assigned to the mobile policeman had been recovered while investigation was going on.

Disabled Tanzanian Child taking first steps

Disability. She was born with only one arm and no lower limbs. But last week, Amina stood upright and took her first few steps.

Although Amina has managed to get around by crawling on her leg stumps, it has been difficult for her mother, Asha. "My husband fled after seeing Amina for the first time. He couldn't deal with it," she explains.

Ghanaian prosthetist Koho Moses Kofi is on a six-month internship at the hospital. Here he is checking the alignment of the prosthesis to ensure

And it is thanks to prosthetics. Amina's mother travelled with her to a special disability hospital in Dar es Salaam, to have them fitted.

Kofi puts on the insert liner so the new prosthesis is comfortable. About 2,500 appliances are made at the hospital each year. Because needy patients get subsidised treatment, Asha only paid $15 for Amina's new legs.

on the prosthesis. This was the moment when Amina first stood up. Some 90% of the hospital's rehabilitation patients are children.

The little girl takes a rest before her daily session of gait training. Amina is a happy child. "She always lifts my mood," says her mother.

Asha gazes at her daughter standing upright: "I thank God for this. I never thought it would be possible to see Amina walk properly like other children."

Amina still has many weeks of training ahead of her to learn how to walk by herself. With only one arm, maintaining balance is especially hard. But once she has mastered walking, she will get a prosthetic arm too.

Farmers in Nigeria demand higher government's commitment to food security

Smallholder farmers across Nigeria on Friday, October 16, 2009 demanded that governments at different level in the country give issue of food security priority.
The farmers who participated at the world food day events organised across the six geo-political zones of the country by ActionAid Nigeria and its partners marched round capital cities with banners stating their demands and also met with state officials.

In Ondo State, South West Nigeria, Coacoa farmers under the aegis of the Golden Cocoa Growers Association of Nigeria, have called on the Federal Government to direct banks to release part of the N200bn agricultural support fund.

The Ondo state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, after listening to issues raised by farmers present promised that the government would assist them with subsidies and grants to improve their business and standard of living.
He also ordered the State commissioner for Agriculture to register the Partnership Against Poverty farmer’s Association as one of the farmers' groups to be assisted.
In the North west state of Kebbi, farmers demanded that the government intervene in the issue of fertiliser distribution.
According to one of the farmers, 50-year old Muhammad Sani Tiggi, "we farmers don’t know whether government distributed fertilizer this season, we only saw fertilizer in the hands of black marketers.

"We the local farmers contribute certain percentage of the food people consume in our local government but yet we don’t receive any Agricultural support from the government at all levels, our farmers need Fertilizer, Soft agricultural loans, tractors, water pumps machines as well as presence of agricultural extension Workers so that our farming activities will improve and food will be available to all”

In Abakaliki, capital city of Ebonyi State in South East Nigeria, farmers and other food rights campaigners took to the street dressed in their farm gears carrying banners.
The Ebonyi farmers known for their rice production raised issues about government commitment to agriculture.

Banks providing loans for agricultural activities in the state met with farmers to discuss grey issues in accessing facilities from the finance houses.

Google confirms secret 'Google phone'

The internet was buzzing over the weekend with renewed reports of Google making its own
smartphone, after the internet powerhouse said it is internally dabbling with a mobile device.Google workers are trying out a device that "combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities", vice president of product management Mario Queiroz said in a blog post.Google is seeking feedback in a process it refers to as "dogfooding" in which innovations are tested internally before being offered to the public on the basis that employees should be willing to "eat our own dogfood."

"This holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level," Queiroz wrote.
"Unfortunately, because dog fooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet."
The Android-based mobile devices are being shared with Google workers worldwide, according to Queiroz. A Google Australia spokesman confirmed local employees would be testing the phones but had not yet received the handsets.
Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported Google planned to sell its own mobile direct to consumers as soon as next year, bypassing wireless operators in a rare strategic move.
Called the Nexus One and made by smartphone maker HTC, the phone will run on the search giant's Android operating system - around which Motorola and other cellphone makers have built devices - and will be sold online, the newspaper cited persons familiar with the matter as saying.
The official Google blog post came a morning after Google workers evidently excited about getting "Google phones" exchanged comments on wildly popular microblogging service Twitter.
"ZOMG we had fireworks and we got the new Google phone," one Google worker said in a tweet. "It's beautiful."

ZOMG is texting slang that originated as a typo of an acronym for "Oh My God" but has come to be used when the phrase is meant a bit sarcastically or while stating the obvious, according to the online Urban Dictionary.

A growing number of US telecom carriers and manufacturers have been adopting Google's open-source Android software in bids to challenge the Apple iPhone and Blackberry from Research in Motion.

Technology industry tracker Gartner predicts that Android-based smartphones will capture 14 per cent of the global market by the year 2012, as compared with a mere two per cent today, according to a report in Computerworld.

USES OF ALCOHOL

Alcohol is a general term denoting a family of organic chemicals with common properties. Members of this family include ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and others. This introduction discusses the physical, chemical, and physiological aspects of the most commonly ingested of these - ethanol.

Alcohol (ethanol) is a clear, volatile liquid that burns (oxidizes) easily. It has a slight, characteristic odor and is very soluble in water. Alcohol is an organic compound composed of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen; its chemical formula is C2H5OH.
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and it is the central nervous system which is the bodily system that is most severely affected by alcohol (see chart below). The degree to which the central nervous system function is impaired is directly proportional to the concentration of alcohol in the blood.

When ingested, alcohol passes from the stomach into the small intestine, where it is rapidly absorbed into the blood and distributed throughout the body. Because it is distributed so quickly and thoroughly the alcohol can affect the central nervous system even in small concentrations. In low concentrations, alcohol reduces inhibitions. As blood alcohol concentration increases, a person's response to stimuli decreases markedly, speech becomes slurred, and he or she becomes unsteady and has trouble walking. With very high concentrations - greater than 0.35 grams/100 milliliters of blood (equivalent to 0.35 grams/210 liters of breath ) - a person can become comatose and die. The American Medical Association has defined the blood alcohol concentration level of impairment for all people to be 0.04 grams/100 milliliters of blood (equivalent to .04 grams/210 liters of breath). The following is a generally accepted guide to the effects of alcohol.

Alcohol Use and Drinking ProblemsAlcohol Equivalencies:
As shown in the following diagram, the absolute amount of ethyl alcohol that a drinker consumes is approximately the same for a 5 ounce glass of wine, a 12 ounce can or bottle of beer, and a standard shot of distilled spirits. In each case, one drink equals a little more than a half-ounce of alcohol. Of course, the larger the wine glass or beer bottle, the greater the amount of alcohol. Also, some beverages such as fortified wines and malt liquor contain more alcohol by volume than ordinary wine or beer.

Blood Alcohol Concentration:
An individual's Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is a function of a number of factors, including gender, body weight, and number of drinks consumed within a period of time. The following table shows how absolute BAC varies as a function of those three variables. In addition, BAC can depend upon whether alcohol is consumed with a meal and whether the beverage is carbonated (e.g., sparkling wine). In most people, the liver is able to metabolize slightly less than half an ounce of alcohol per hour. The table shows BAC for number of drinks consumed in one hour.

Male and Female Brains

Male Brain

Female brain Comic......Laught it out!!!!!!

Sex differences and the brain.

What does it matter, you say? I think it does. Through such knowledge we will eventually be better able to understand the basis for behaviors that many now perceive as entirely rooted in social custom or familial history. From that understanding, we will gain the acceptance, patience, and respect so vital to all human endeavor.
Interestingly, people who see a human brain for the first time often ask, "Is it male or female?" Yet, for many millennia no one, even scientists, thought about sex-related differences and similarities in the human brain. A brain was just a brain. Now hardly a year goes by that we don't read authoritative studies showing these differences. I was taken aback just a few months ago when, at a Ph.D. examination dealing with Magnetic Resonance Imaging of human brains, the student reported having pooled the data from both sexes. Even if the intent was not to explore male-female differences, one can hardly expect to make accurate interpretations from such mixed data.

Obviously, no single factor accounts for the gender-related differences we are finding. We are slowly, one by one, unraveling the various integrative factors involved in this mystery. A basic question being asked is whether the differences between male and female brains outweigh the similarities or vice versa. Some researchers report finding more differences within the sexes than between the sexes. Please understand that the objective of my talk is not to discuss whether the brain of one sex is superior to the brain of the other but to explore the significance of the differences we are discovering in the brains of males and females. As you might imagine, to conduct these studies, we need brain samples so that we can make our comparisons. So far, no live human beings, males or females, have been willing to give us their brain tissue to use in our experiments. But all is not lost: The rat brain, oddly enough, has the basic components and major structures in its little pecan-size brain that we humans have in our large cantaloupe-size brain. In general terms, what we have learned about the anatomy of the rat brain has later been replicated by studies in higher mammals including humans. What is particularly important, of course, is that using the laboratory rat allows us to control many variables--the sex, the age, the living conditions, the diet, the water intake, the environment, and so forth, thus assuring clear comparisons.

To appreciate the work we do, let me take a moment to give you some fundamentals of the brain's anatomy. In the embryo our nervous system starts as a simple tube, the head end forming the brain and the remainder forming the spinal cord. The brain is divided into three parts: the hind brain, midbrain and forebrain. Our interest is primarily in the forebrain, which expands tremendously over the course of its development to form about 85% of our total brain, called the cerebral hemispheres. These two large hemispheres are familiar to anyone who has seen a picture of the brain The outer layers of the cerebral hemispheres are called the cerebral cortex. (Cortex means bark.) With the use of a light microscope we can easily measure the thickness of this cortex in the rat because it is smooth and does not have folds as do more highly evolved brains.

Factors affecting cortical thickness are the main interest in our gender studies because the cerebral cortex is the most highly evolved part of the brain and deals with higher cognitive processing. The cerebral cortex, like other parts of the brain, consists of nerve cells with branches and functional connections called synapses; glial cells, the metabolic and structural support cells for the nerve cells; and blood vessels. Cortical thickness is a key factor; it gives us an overall indication of what is happening collectively to these structures within the cortex.

Joke Silva spends time with son

While being a Nollywood star will keep most mothers from their homes because they are always at one location or the other, it is pertinent for these mothers to spend whatever little time they have with their kids when they are around.

And this must have been the reason star actress, Joke Silva over the weekend took her son and another kid to the Silverbird Galleria where they had the time of their lives.

The kids strolled round the Galleria and bought the things they loved with mummy at their side making sure they were okay. The actress left with the kids shortly before the beginning of a premier that was scheduled to hold at the cinema that evening. She was absent from the premier and it is not too wrong to say that she may have needed to get the kids home to rest as there will be school the next day.
For 24 years, renowned actress, Joke Silva has been married to seasoned thespian, Olu Jacobs. Being both in a profession where marriages seem to be permanently on banana peels, the timeless duo have sustained a near effortless romance that has seen them handle their marriage and turn it into a model for other Nollywood personalities and pretenders alike. The mother of two, and elegant actress, is not only adept in acting movies, she is also an accomplished entertainer who would easily win African Oscars, year in, year out.
