Veganuary campaign encourages people to go VEGAN in January

New Year, new diet? You’ve heard of Movember, but how about Veganuary? The movement asks people to make a short-term commitment to veganism.
A worldwide campaign is nudging carnivores to switch to veganism during January.

Veganuary was started in late 2013 by U.K.-based husband-and-wife duo Matthew Glover and Jane Land.
"We wanted to provide people with the practical help and advice to try vegan, but we also wanted to create an inclusive community where people could feel supported and heard," Land writes on the campaign's site.
After overindulging during the busy holiday season, you might be ready to veg out in January — or, more specifically, vegan out.
Participants sign up on Veganuary.com and pledge to cut meat, fish, dairy and other animal products and byproducts from their diets.
The site itself functions as a go-to hub for all things vegan. It includes a product guide for vegan neophytes who want to know if they can still drink Budweiser (they can).
There is also a section that offers tips on ordering vegan meals when you dine out along with a list of animal product-free menu items at a number of chain restaurants.

Hesitant to give up eggs and cheese? Worries that buying specialty vegan replacements for pantry staples will break the bank?
Veganuary.com has a myth-busting FAQ section that addresses the most common vegan-related concerns.

"The vegan lifestyle isn't difficult in itself as plant-based foods and other animal-free products are plentiful," says the answer to the question, "Isn't veganism just too difficult?"
"It seems difficult because we don't live in a vegan world — consuming animal products is familiar, habitual and made incredibly easy by the culture and society we inhabit," the site says.

The main focus of Veganuary isn't getting people to switch to veganism to help end animal cruelty, although that factor does come into play.
Instead, the campaign highlights the different reasons people may decide to go vegan, including a love of animals, environmental issues and health concerns.
"Whatever your reason, we're here to support you," the site reads.
