Raw newcomer Sami Zayn has revealed he was blown away by the
thundering reception he was given by his hometown fans last night, admitting he
couldn’t have hoped for a finer way to be blooded on WWE’s flagship show.
The former NXT champ, 30, was left bruised, beaten but still
beaming following a thumping performance in the US Open challenge against John
Cena - and, according to WWE.com, will undergo an MRI on his shoulder later
today after appearing to pick up a knock in the opening exchanges of the match.
In the moments immediately after his bout with WWE’s perennial
headliner however, Zayn’s thoughts were still very much preoccupied with the
ecstatic welcome he received.
He reflected on the Montreal crowd’s chants: “I know,
obviously, NXT has grown leaps and bounds over the last couple of years - last
year especially with us being on the WWE Network - but I really did not expect
that.
“That was crazy, just really exceeded my expectations and,
God, I can’t tell you how much it means to me.”
The Canadian star, introduced to the ring by WWE Hall of
Famer Bret Hart, joked he couldn’t ‘get his head around’ the scale of
circumstances surrounding his full singles debut on the main roster.
“I really don’t think I could’ve picked a better scenario
than what happened tonight,” he said.
“[Appearing in my] Hometown… I can’t even begin to tell you
what that means to me in itself, let alone go against John Cena for a WWE
championship.“
Zayn seemed to struggle with an injury to his left shoulder
following an early back suplex but insisted on battling on after being
inspected by a ringside doctor.
The crowd darling wasted no time in endearing himself to the
wider TV audience, cracking Cena with his sensational sliding tornado DDT
through the corner and a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall.
Zayn even absorbed and kicked out of an Attitude Adjustment
before eventually falling to honourable defeat by way of a springboard stunner
and a second AA.
Elsewhere, Dean Ambrose inserted himself into the WWE World
Heavyweight title reckoning at Payback alongside Roman Reigns and Randy Orton
after stealing a pin on current champ Seth Rollins.
Pressed into action by Kane, Rollins was left horrified
after a late stipulation guaranteeing Ambrose would be added to his triple
threat championship defence was enacted, widening Seth’s chances of victory at
the PPV.
And come the main event, tensions between the combatants in
the newly proposed fatal four way contest continued to rise as Reigns, Orton
and an intervening Ambrose turned on each other after battling various members
of The Authority.
