LASSA FEVER DISEASES CAUSED BY RATE IN THE STATES.

NIGERIA: LASSA FEVER - OGUN GETS VACCINES, ALERTS RESIDENTS ABEOKUTA
The Ogun State government at the weekend confirmed that it had received the federal government's consignment of lassa-fever vaccines as it alerted residents of the possible outbreak of the disease if they do not keep away rats from their homes.

The state's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who made this disclosure during a news conference in Abeokuta, said that the gesture would go a long way in checking the outbreak of the disease in the state.
Soyinka advised residents to keep away rats by fumigating their environment.

He assured that the state was prepared to tackle any possible occurrence of the disease in any part of the 20 local government areas, stressing that "it is not something that we cannot overcome. This is part of the proactive and preventive measures, which were often lacking in the past.

"I want to confirm to you that we have received the consignment of vaccines from the federal government, which will make us prepare and tackle the disease, which first broke out in the state in 2005. Our medical officials will be going from one local government to another to provide information. If we are able to keep our homes clean and away from rats, we are sure of having lassa-fever free state."

He claimed that there had been no outbreak or record of any incidence of the disease, "but, we are just trying to keep ourselves abreast of it. We cannot wait to let it happen before going after information and sensitization."
