The taekwondo event of the London Olympics will not start until August 8 but Nigeria’s representative in the sport, Chika Chukwumerije says he cannot wait to begin contest.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics silver medallist and Team Nigeria captain in London says preparation is key to his success in London.
He said, “We are yet to win a medal but that should not be a burden to the other athletes. We must lift our spirit and do it for Nigeria. We are representing Nigeria here and the flag must fly high.
“I am sure my colleagues are aware of the importance of their good performance on the faces of Nigerians at home. They are waiting for us to win medals and I am hopeful that I can do it. Many of them can do it as well because we had great preparation before coming here. We were disappointed early but we are strong now and ready to compete.”
Chukwumerije and Isa Mohammad are the two Nigerians athletes who are taking part in taekwondo. The captain says his partner’s attitude in training gives him hope of great outing.
“The taekwondo team is small but efficient. Isah is a great guy and he is fit for the contest. He was part of the preparation and I am sure he learnt a lot from the tour. We will keep encouraging ourselves and pray for favourable draws. We’re still in the dark about our opponents. All we know is that Isah will fight on August 9 while my fight comes up on August 11.
