Traders at the Labaowo International Market, Ogunpa in
Ibadan North West Local Government Area of Oyo State, on Thursday, counted
their losses as a result of an inferno which gutted a section of the market on
Wednesday.,
Some of the traders who spoke with the Nigerian
Tribune lamented that most of their wares and goods were lost to the inferno
which caught them unawares.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the market on
Thursday, most of them were seen packing the wreckage while others were
discussing the incident in groups.
It was learnt that most of the affected traders
obtained loans from banks and cooperative societies to stock their shops and
were still paying back the loans.
One of the affected traders, Olaurewaju Tanimola, said
that he was in the shop when suddenly, he heard the shout of fire and before he
could come out, the environment had been enveloped with thick cloud.
He said that as result, he was unable to come out with
anything from the shop.
According to him, the late arrival of the state fire
service officials led to the loss of several goods and the complete burning
down of about 100 shops located in about five buildings in the market.
Also speaking, another trader, Dayo Adedapo, said he
was unable to salvage anything from his shop because he was sleeping when the
incident happened.
