Eagles not yet a finished job – Okpala

As Nigerians continue to celebrate Super Eagles’ qualification for the South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, one of the assistant coaches to Stephen Keshi, Sylvanus Okpala has said that the re-building process was still far from completed.
In a chat with Sports Vanguard in Calabar, Okpala said “the entire team is still being worked on. That we were able to beat Liberia 6-1 did not mean the team has actualised. We will continue to try more players as we prepare for the tournament in South Africa. We will look at all the departments of the team”

He, however, frowned at suggestions that the feat over the Lone Star of Liberia could not be a true measure of the depth the team had attained under Keshi.
“There are no longer minnows in world football. You can imagine what is happening in Europe, South America and even back home in Africa. Who expected to see Venezuela play in the final of the 2011 South American Cup with countries like Argentina, Brazil, Peru falling by the way side? Look at Spain winning the Euro Cup back to back and the World Cup in between when the likes of Germany, Italy are there?”
He cited Zambia’s  triumph over Cote d’Ivoire in last year’s Afcon final and said, “Liberia should not be seen as a cheap opponent. They have never been easy opponents to Nigeria. People should go back to history and look at our record against Liberia.”

The former Nigeria international said the Saturday victory would not in any way make the team digress, rather “it will serve as an incentive for us to work harder. It has given the players a glimpse of what they can achieve through hard work and we will build on that to give Nigeria a credible outing in South Africa.
