Lagos-based actress, Bukola Awoyemi, is hoping for her first awards as her yet-to-be-released film, Igba Nba Jo – Just When I am About to Dance – has been nominated in four categories for the Best of Nollywood Awards.
These are Best Edited Film, Best
Costume, Movie with the Best Sound and Cinematography of the Year. In
the Best Costume category, it is competing with Jejere, Sotonto Alapata, I Take my Chance and Adesua. In Best Edited category are Phone Swap, I Take my Chances, In the Cupboard and Aiyekoto.
And while Adesua, Sonto Alapata, Phone Swap and Eyinju Olodumare are the films to beat in Best Sound, in the cinematography category, it is competing with Adesua, Phone Swap, In the Cupboard and Aiyekooto.
Igba Nba Jo is the story of
25-year-old Adunola, a victim of an avoidable single parentage. Her rich
father abandons her and her mother, a development that affects her
psychologically, especially when she becomes mature enough to have
boyfriends and eventually get married. All efforts to convince Adunola
(acted by Awoyemi herself) to open the door of her heart to the knocks
of eager suitors hit the rocks. Her friends, among whom is acted by
Kabirat Khafidipe, try to persuade her to welcome men into her lives,
but she does not appear to be ready to play ball. Her conviction is that
if she can survive for 25 years without a father, she can live all her
life without any man.
Awoyemi, popularly called Arugba, being
the role she played in Tunde Kelani’s movie that goes by the same title,
says she does not believe that winning or missing an award should give
an artiste a sleepless night, but she is hopeful of a good outing.
“The fact that Igba Nba jo has
been nominated in four categories shows that we have done a good job,”
she says. “So, if we go ahead to win, it will be a plus.”
The BON awards is holding on Sunday.
