THE incessant bombings
in the Northern part of the country is giving Islam a bad name, whereas
the religion not only preaches peace, but also abhors violence in all its
ramifications.
The leader of a group, the
Northern Brotherhood Movement, Alhaji Aminu Mohammed Danmaliki, made the remark
while extending Eid-el-Kabir wishes to Christians.
He said ensuring peace,
unity and security in the country is a responsibilty of all and sundry and,
therefore, should not be left in the hands of governments alone.
According to Danmiliki,
Muslims and Christians could unite to fight the threats against peaceful
co-existence in the country, especially among adherents of the two religions.
He said said the goodwill
message on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir was a way of extending
hands of fellowship to Christians.
“We did this as a mark of
respect and the need to set a new beginning towards strengthening ties of
kinship among the adherents of Islam and Christianity in the spirit of
sacrifice, which Eid-el-Kabir symbolises.
“This gesture has become
necessary amid the security challenges facing particularly Northern Nigeria that led to the loss of
lives and property of both Muslims and Christians.
“The Northern Brotherhood
Movement, having realised that the issue of ensuring peace, unity and security
should not be left in the hands of the three tiers of governments alone, wishes
to thank CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria) for your responsible and godly
decision not to attack Muslims in retaliation of the bombings of churches in
the North,” Danmaliki stated.
He added: “Your decision has
not only shamed the perpetrators of these heinous crimes, who want the violence
to escalate, but also portrayed you as a peace-loving association.”
According to him, the
Northern Brotherhood Movement was established to foster brotherliness
among Muslims and Christians, as well as the various ethnic groups.
He assured that the group
would be “embarking on massive campaign against these bombings, which
have given Islam a bad name, even though the religion of Islam is totally
against violence in any form. We will continue to remind Muslims to follow the
true teachings of Islam, which guarantee peace.”
