Expert Raises the Alarm over Increasing Drug-resistant TB

A tuberculosis patient

Head of TB/DOTS clinic of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Dr. G.A. Ewu, Tuesday raised the alarm that there was a growing number of patients with the drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis.

He flew the red flag when a team of fund providers for the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and other diseases, Global Fund, went on an assessment tour of some recipients of the finance around Abuja.
The team, led by Andrew Hurst, Senior Media Specialist, and Colette Selman, Senior Fund Portfolio Manager, High Impact Africa 1, visited University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, St. Mary's Catholic Hospital, and the DOTS (Direct Observation and Treatment Short Course) Centre of the Town Hall Clinic, all in Gwagwalada, on the first of the three days' inspection.

Dr. Ewu was also concerned that there was an increase in the number of patients with co-infection of HIV and TB, as 50 per cent of those screened at the specialist hospital had both diseases.
