Fire guts Lagos airport

A fire incident was, on Thursday, recorded at a construction site beside the ‘D’ wing extension of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The fire, which was caused by the activities of welders working on the site, lasted for about 15 minutes.

According to information gathered, trouble started when sparks from the construction site fell on some synthetic foams being used to pad cooling systems within the airport terminal by the workers, resulting in a fire outbreak.

The intervention of the fire service attached to the airport, however, prevented the fire from getting out of control.

Confirming the development, the General Manager, Corporate Communication, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Yakubu Dati, however, said there were no casualties.

“The only fallout of the incident was the switching off of the power source which has since been restored. Normal activities at the airport have continued, as planes are taking off and landing without hitches,” he said.

FAAN,  however, commended what it called the rapid response of the officers and men of its Fire Department and other relevant agencies for restoring normalcy, even as it pledged to continue to provide secure, safe and comfortable airport environment as enshrined in the aviation masterplan.
