A six hour long operation on conjoined twins done by doctors of Steve
Biko Academic Hospital was applauded for bringing out a successful
result. The twin boys, namely Recall and Recant Sibuyi, were joined from
abdomen and pelvis and also shared several other organs, were separated
successfully by the doctors and were kept in the intensive care unit of
the hospital so as to minimize any further complications.
But the 11-months-old twins are said to be fine and will soon be transferred to the general pediatric ward. They were in the
hospital since their birth and were kept under observance that if the operation is possible.
ho was in the surgery team, said
that the biggest challenges in the operation were to close the
abdominal wall and if they would be able to separate the penis of the
babies, but all went well. The team was glad and relieved that the
babies were saved from any serious bleeding after the surgery and were
strong enough to manage without any ventilators.
Dr Ernest Kenoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, was proud
of his team of doctors and said that it was second successful operation
of conjoined twins in last 15 years.
