Ondo.....What seemed to be an almost resolved disagreement between a couple, Mr.
Toki and Adesewa Ojo of Ibulesoro town in Ifedore Local Government area
of Ondo State at the weekend finally turned tragic when a 45-year-old
husband killed his wife with a dane gun after returning from a hunting
expedition.
The residents of the town were still wandering what may have gone wrong again between the couple even when the peace process initiated by both the families of the man and the wife was already leading to the achievement of truce.
While Mr Ojo is a member of staff of the state Ministry of Agriculture, Adesewa, a mother of three, was a member of staff of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
THISDAY gathered that the couple had been living apart for the past one year over a disagreement.
However, the family members were said to have intervened in the matter, which made the wife to resume performance of some of her marital responsibilities to her estranged husband, including cooking for him, even while still living separately.
The main cause of the fight, which led to the death of the deceased in
her brother's house, still remained unknown as at press time because the
only person with the couple in the house, Olamide, their daughter, was
confounded by the incident.
Olamide, who narrated the ugly incident, said her father (the suspect) was a troublesome person and that was why her mother packed out of his house to settle down with her younger brother's wife who also lives in the same town.
She said as part of the settlement process agreed upon by both families, the deceased was asked to be preparing food for her husband from her brother's house where she was staying and this she had been doing over time.
"My father always comes to our house to eat in the morning and at night but my father just complained that mummy refused to give him food a day to the incident. She later cooked the food for him at night before he went out for hunting and we also went to sleep.
"In the morning, my father came back from hunting, he and my mum sat down in the sitting room discussing around 6am. I later went back to my room but all of a sudden, I heard a gunshot and when I got to the sitting room, it was my mum I met on the floor in a pool of her own blood. She died on the spot because she was shot at a close range," Olamide narrated amidst sobs.
Another thing that baffled the residents was that after Ojo was arrested, he remained unruffled and even asked to be given cigarette.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mr Wole Ogodo, said the suspect had been arrested and detained at the Igbara Oke Division.
"He has been arrested and the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigative Department at the state police headquarters, Akure for further investigation," the PPRO stated.
He added that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.
