went from a Manchester United's boy wonder to a Real monster
When Cristiano Ronaldo first arrived
from sunny Lisbon in drizzly Manchester, little was known about the boy wonder
with the yellow highlights in his hair.
However, along with his steadily
improving performances culminating in him becoming one of the world’s best ever
players, Real’s No 7 has transformed himself into football’s fashion icon…kind
of.
From the ridiculous shorts on the
beach, the over-tanned oiled up man on the sunbed and countless display of
silly hats, CR7 has provided us with many laughable moments.
Let’s be honest though, if you could
run, shoot and head like him, you couldn't care less about the rest.
After joining Manchester United in
2003 for just over £12 million, Ronaldo enjoyed plenty of success with the Red
Devils, winning the FA Cup in his first season after scoring the opening goal
in their 3-0 victory over Millwall in the final.
Ronaldo was also the man who scored
United's 1000th Premier League goal, in October 2005. He also won the FIFPro
Special Young Player of the Year award in that season.
He didn't have to wait long for his
next trophy, as he was part of the League Cup winning team in the 2005-06
season. United beat Wigan 4-0 in the final to pick up the trophy.
But despite putting in plenty of
good performances he still had his detractors who were unsure whether he was
tough enough for the English game.
Ronaldo's play was filled with
tricks, notoriously stepovers, which often didn't come off or weren't
effective.
His breakout season, however, came
the following year when he was not only an integral part of the title winning
team, but personally broke the 20 goals in a season barrier and won back to
back player of the month awards.
The 2007-08 season was the pinnacle
of Ronaldo's spell at Manchester United.
He was named as World Player of the
Year as he scored an incredible 31 Premier League goals, won the Champions
League and scored one of his most memorable goals against Portsmouth. It was a
season that made the world take notice…and they did.
After one more season in Manchester,
scoring 26 goals for the club, he was eventually sold for a record £80 million
to Real Madrid.
Since joining the European giants,
he has gone on to score 136 goals in 126 games, cementing his place at the top
of the world's game and further pressing his case on the ultimate question…
Messi or Ronaldo?
