THURSDAY was a day of honour in Ibadan for Chief Oluwole Awolowo,
Publisher/Vice Chairman of the African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc (ANN Plc), as
Nigerians from all walks of life led by the Senate President, Senator David
Mark, rose to pay their last respects to the illustrious Nigerian who breathed
his last on March 27, 2013 in a London hospital and is to be buried today in
Ikenne-Remo.
As early as 7.00 a.m, the Imalefalafia, Ibadan head office of the Nigerian
Tribune had been thronged by people who arrived the venue of the commendation
service and media event put together by the ANN Plc to secure strategic sitting
positions that would avail them an opportunity to have a vantage view of the
proceedings.
The body of the late publisher of the Tribune titles, accompanied by family
members including Dr (Mrs) Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, Barrister Olusegun Awolowo,
children of the deceased and the Managing Director/Editor in Chief of the ANN
Plc, was met at the Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway by top management
staff of the ANN Plc as well as a contingent of the police, the Federal Road
Safety Corps and Man O War, who led the motorcade to the Imalefalafia Junction,
where the pallbearers from MIC disembarked and bore the casket bearing the body
of Chief Oluwole Awolowo on their shoulders with dexterous dance steps through
the street to the Tribune House.
The pallbearers were joined by pipers from the Police Band as they led the
remains of the late publisher on his last journey to the company where he was
the Vice-Chairman for over a quarter of a century.
