NIGERIA- PRESIDENT
Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday hosted the victorious Golden Eaglets to a
cocktail party, announcing various rewards for the players and officials
as a token of appreciation for winning the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in
the United Arab Emirates ( UAE).
The President rewarded each of the players with the sum of N2 million
while the team’s head coach, Manu Garba was given N3million for his
efforts.
Other beneficiaries are the three assistant coaches who got
N2.5million each, the physiotherapist, N500,000 and the other officials
who received N300,000 each.
Speaking at the event which took place at the Banquet Hall of the
Presidential Villa, the President urged state governors and business
people to complement the effort of the Federal Government in rewarding
the victorious Eaglets.
Recalling that he had previously hosted the team when they emerged
runners-up to Côte d’Ivoire in the African tournament and charged them
to conquer the world, he said he was pleased with their transformation
which has made them world beaters within a few months.
Jonathan noted that Nigeria was witnessing a golden era in sports, saying that it was in keeping with his promise to revive the sector by setting up a road map after the London 2012 Olympics fiasco where the Nigerian contingent failed to win a single medal.
While commending their high sense of patriotism, he said government would continue with measures to ensure continuous success in the sector and congratulated the team for its well deserved victory.
He urged the the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to nurture the
team and ensure that they carry their form into senior categories.
In his address, the Minister of Sport, Malam Bolaji Abdulahi, noted that with the victories recorded in sports under this administration so far, it makes the Jonathan’s administration the most successful in sports in the history if the country.
