England batsman Joe Root
will miss out on the Three Lions’ World Twenty20 campaign after breaking his thumb in their one-day international
series victory over West Indies.
The 23-year-old left the
tour after a ball struck his glove during the 25-run win over the Windies, which sealed a 2-1
series triumph, though it was suggested he could recover in time for
the upcoming tournament.
But the England and Wales
Cricket Board confirmed on Monday that Root will not be fit in time to travel
to Bangladesh, with Ian Bell called into the side as his replacement.
The decision was made
following a consultation with a specialist on Monday, after Root flew home from
England's ongoing tour of the Caribbean.
England have requested
Bell, who replaced Root in their squad against the West Indies, be officially
added to their World Twenty20 15 - and the International Cricket Council has
granted approval.
There is no date yet for
23-year-old Root to return to cricket, with the start of
the new English season less than a month away.
