New Plans for more Data Centers- MTN

AFRICA – As businesses continue to expand aggressively across Africa’s high growth markets, MTN Business, the business-to-business arm of South African telecoms company MTN, has revealed plans to open more data centres in key markets where it operates.

MTN , which currently dishes out cloud services and video conferencing, is poised to grow its market share on the continent by continuing support to key sectors of the economy of countries it operates, MTN Group chief commercial officer, Pieter Verkade says.

The South African-based teleco is also expanding its product and service portfolio in Africa to include “machine to machine” — the remote, wireless exchange of data between devices such as navigation systems, meters, and security alarms.

Over the years, tech analysts on the continent have viewed MTN more as a tech company, as it has consistently tried to diversify its revenue stream beyond voice delivery to information and communications technologies (ICT) business, e-commerce, collaboration and other data services including mobile money.

Recently, the company partnered Ecobank, a pan-African bank with banking operations in 33 African countries, to help improve the bank’s access to mobile financial services in the African continent.

MTN Business also partnered with SAP to offer mobility services to enterprise customers across various sectors. The business unit operates in 24 countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya with data centres in nine countries including Cameroon, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda.
