Benfica believe they will
hold on to striker Oscar Cardozo after a sweeping
statement by Newcastle's new managing director Lee Charnley.
The Premier League side
announced Charnley - an unknown name outside St James' Park - as Joe Kinnear's
replacement and he will now be in charge of incoming and outgoing transfers.
Charnley said: "Our
transfer policy and strategy is very clear and will remain unchanged.
"We will focus on
identifying and recruiting young players whose best years are ahead of them,
which in nearly all cases means players in their early to mid-20s and not
beyond."
Newcastle have been
monitoring Cardozo for a number of seasons but it appears their interest will
dissipate now Charnley is in charge of recruitment.
Loic Remy is on loan at the club from QPR until the end of the
season and they looked likely to make the move permanent but the 27-year-old
France international may now be seen as too old for Alan Pardew's evolving
side.
