Harry Redknapp admits Rio Ferdinand is exactly the sort of player QPR should be signing this summer.
The Rs have been linked with the ex-Manchester United
defender, along with Frank Lampard and Joe Cole, as Redknapp looks
to build a squad capable of keeping the west London club in the Premier League.
All three stars played under the 67-year-old at West Ham
and, speaking to the Alan Brazil
Sports Breakfast show, the Loftus Road chief insists he needs people
who have shown fight in the past.
“Rio Ferdinand is a very good player,” he told Alan Brazil
and special guest host Michael Dawson. “I
signed Rio at 14 [for West Ham]. He’s a fantastic player and a great pro.
“He’s probably been the best centre-back in Europe in the
last few years. What a career he’s had at Manchester United.
“You need good lads who know the game. They can run the dressing
room. It’s an easy game when you’ve got good players.”
Rangers’ last spell in the top-flight, which eventually saw
them relegated, was dogged by a huge wage bill and an under-performing squad,
and Redknapp is wary of not repeating the same mistakes this time.
“QPR need a bit of experience,” he added. “Most importantly,
though, we need players we can rely on and who are prepared to have a go.
"Last time there were lots of players brought in who
were not really up to the job.
“We have to make sure we’ve got the right sort of lads this
time around.”
