The woman wanted for pummeling a New Jersey woman in front of her
2-year-old son surrendered to authorities on Monday.
Latia Harris, 25, was planning to turn herself in nearly a week after
she viciously attacked Catherine Ferreira behind a McDonald’s in Salem on June
24, WCAU-TV reported.
She showed up at the Salem Police Department around 7 p.m. Monday,
police said. Authorities were "close to capturing" the fugitive over
the weekend in Philadelphia, about 40 miles north of Salem.
A video of the brutal beatdown — which was recorded by bystanders —
shows only Ferreira’s son, Xzavion Ortiz, trying to intervene by bravely
kicking at Harris.
Harris was angry at Ferreira for making jokes that she was romantically
involved with one of their co-workers at the fast-food restaurant.
Harris was still on duty and in uniform when she approached Ferreira
after her shift and assaulted the mother.
Ferreira, who was treated for a broken nose and bruises and lacerations
to her face, said she just wanted to be done with the ordeal.
“I feel sorry for her,” she told the South Jersey Times. “She has two kids, and all of
this — over what? Nothing.”
Harris faces charges that include aggravated assault and two counts of
making terroristic threats. She's held in lieu of $35,000 bail.
