U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara made disgraced former Assemblywoman
Gabriela Rosa an offer she could refuse, sources said.
Bharara wanted Rosa, whom he prosecuted for entering into a sham
marriage to gain citizenship, to wear a wire in exchange for leniency,
according to sources close to the former legislator.
But unlike other trapped lawmakers, the Dominican-born Rosa said no
way, the sources said.
First elected in 2012 to represent Washington Heights, Rosa resigned
her seat in June and faces up to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to
the sham marriage.
She also admitted committing bankruptcy
fraud and accepting an illegal contribution from a foreign government representative.
A Bharara spokeswoman had no comment.
Rosa’s attorney, Matthew Myers, who began representing her a month
before she pleaded guilty, said he was unaware if an offer was made for her to
wear a wire before he took her case.
“She’s really not that kind of person to have done that,” Myers said.
“She’s not a rat or a snitch.”
Former Assembly members Brian McLaughlin and Nelson Castro agreed to
wear wires in unrelated federal cases.
