Sen. David Mark appeals to striking doctors to resume work

The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, has appealed to the striking medical doctors to see the outbreak of the  Ebola virus  in Nigeria as a national emergency and resume work.

Mark made the call in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Paul Mumeh, in Abuja on Friday.
Mark advised the striking doctors to put aside whatever grievances or misgivings they had with government and return to duty to save the situation as a demonstration of their patriotism.

According to him, failure to hearken to this national call is akin to sentencing Nigerians to untimely deaths, which he described as a disservice to humanity and a total betrayal of their noble profession.

The senate president also reminded the doctors of the Hippocratic oath they had sworn to, that their primary duty was to save patients’ lives before other considerations.

The statement recalled part of the modern Hippocratic oath written in 1964, which states: ``I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

`` I will remember that I remain a member of society with special obligation to all my fellow human beings; those sound of mind and body as well as infirm."

He, however, said that no one was opposed to the doctors’ demands, adding that they were genuine and reasonable.

The senate president expressed optimism that the Federal Government would also do the needful and address their (doctors) grievances.
He added that government officials nevertheless needed to be alive to be able to sort out the doctors’ complaints.

He also enjoined all citizens to constantly practice good personal hygiene to halt the possible spread of the disease .

Mark further directed the Senate Committee on Health to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health and other health institutions in the fight against Ebola disease.

He said that the National Assembly was treating the Ebola case as a national emergency and had in the mean time embarked on sensitisation programme on the matter. (NAN)
