Melissa Rivers reveals President Obama sent handwritten note
The show must go on — and that includes Joan Rivers’ “Fashion Police.”
The E! channel said Friday that it will continue to air the
comedienne’s signature program without the famously hilarious and foul-mouthed
Rivers.
“We have thought long and hard about what Joan would have wanted ...
(for) ‘Fashion Police,’ ” E! executives said .
“We decided, with Melissa Rivers’ blessing, that Joan would have wanted
the franchise to continue. ‘Fashion Police’ will return in 2015, commencing
with Golden Globes coverage Jan. 12,” it said.
The announcement came as Rivers was honored with a 90-minute tribute that her daughter hosted. Melissa Rivers
is the show’s executive producer.
The black-clad younger Rivers, 46, in her first public appearance since
her mother’s death, said there was only one way her wickedly catty mom would
have wanted the night to go.
“By remembering the incredible jokes, the unbelievable guests and all
the moments ...that made ‘Fashion Police’ must-see TV. For the next 90 minutes,
we’re going to do what my mom loved to do most of all: laugh,” she said.
The 81-year-old funny woman died Sept. 4, a week after going into
cardiac arrest during an endoscopy at an outpatient surgery facility in New
York.
Rivers’ larynx seized after her
personal doctor tried to do an unauthorized biopsy of the star’s vocal cords,
sources told the Daily News.
Melissa Rivers focused Friday on her mother’s legacy.
“She affected so many people, and people you would never expect to have
humor,” the devoted daughter said.
“I received a letter from the White House, President Obama, someone who
was often a target of her jokes, as was Mrs. Obama, but I received a
hand-written note saying ‘Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think,’”
Melissa Rivers said.
The caustic comic’s co-hosts took turns sharing their favorite
memories. Giuliana Rancic revealed one of the set’s most closely guarded
secrets: the true contents of Rivers’ coffee cup.
“White wine, always white,” Rancic said, noting that Rivers’ arrived on
a flight from New York at dawn every Friday to start filming at 7 a.m.
Cheers, Joan.
