A mother-of-three was shot dead by a callous criminal who opened fire
after the 27-year-old spurned the man’s advances inside a Detroit bar, the
woman’s distraught family says.
Mary “Unique” Spears, 27, was fatally shot in the head early Saturday
outside the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375 on the city’s east side,
while five other family members were wounded by gunfire in the hail of bullets.
The family, including Spears’ fiancĂ©e, were celebrating the life
of a man whose funeral they had just attended, a distraught family member told WJBK-TV. The good times
quickly turned tragic when the 38-year-old suspect, unknown to the family,
began to harass Spears.
“He said, 'Can I get your name, your number,'" the relative, who
asked not to be identified over fear of retribution, told the FOX affiliate. "She said, 'I have a man,
I can't talk to you.'"
The man was relentless, continuing to harass Spears as she told him
off. By 2 a.m., the man was booted from the club, but he confronted Spears,
hitting her and sparking a brawl out front along Sherwood near 7 Mile.
“He shot her one time," the relative told the station. "And she tried to run.
And he shot her two more times in her head."
Five other family members, including Spears’ fiancee, were injured in
the fusillade, though all were expected to survive. The woman had three sons,
ages 1, 4 and 8, family said. A family member created a GoFundMe page
to raise money for funeral costs. Some $1,500 had been raised by Tuesday
afternoon.
It just hurts, I can’t even sleep at night to see (Spears) laying there
in the blood,” the distraught relative told WJBK.
The unidentified suspect, called a monster by the family, is expected
to be charged and arraigned sometime Tuesday.
"What was on your mind that you could be so evil to kill a
beautiful woman because she said no to you?" Belinda Bailey, Spears' aunt,
told WJBK.
