The First Lady is a known supporter of fashion — but also receives some support of her own.
Michelle Obama, who held the first Fashion Education Workshop at the
White House on Wednesday, said even she needs some strategic shapewear help.
"Spanx is a multibillion-dollar company… and we all wear them with
pride."
The FLOTUS, who was wearing a dress designed by Fashion Institute of
Technology student Natalya Koval, addressed a crowd of young fashion students
and reminded them that any idea takes time and risk. She cited Spanx founder
Sara Blakely, who spent years working at Disney World and selling office
supplies before making her dream of supportive shapewear into a supremely
lucrative reality.
Obama said that while the guests — from Parsons The New School for
Design, the Fashion Institute of Technology and elsewhere — were lucky to be
there, they weren't unique, and success in the highly-competitive industry
takes not only clout but determination.
"Fashion is about so much more than just a pretty pair of pumps or
the perfect hemline," she said. "For so many people across the
country, it is a calling, it is a career, and it's a way they feed their
families."
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was in the East Wing of the White
House, joined by designers like Jason Wu, Zac Posen, Lela Rose, Diane von
Furstenburg, and Maria Cornejo, who helped tutor students in workshops about
everything from wearable tech to clothing construction.
It's something both Obama and Wintour feel passionately about — as both
spoke of the importance of fashion education at the Costume Institute's opening
at the Met last May.
