as Prince William and Kate Middleton arrive at New York’s Carlyle Hotel
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama threw down the ultimate
VIP gauntlet Sunday night, stepping out in American finery hours after Prince
William and his pregnant wife, Kate Middleton, arrived in New York for a
three-day visit.
The First Lady turned heads in a pale pink gown with sequin detail by
California-based designer Monique Lhuillier, while the Leader of the Free World
looked sharp in a black tuxedo at a White House reception for Kennedy Center
honorees.
William and Kate did have plenty of cheering Yanks in their corner as
they arrived in New York Sunday afternoon.
The royals touched down at Kennedy Airport at 4:37 p.m. aboard British
Airways Flight 177 before their motorcade whisked them to The Carlyle on E.
76th St., the luxury hotel preferred by William’s late mother, Princess Diana.
The Duchess — who is five months pregnant with her second child —
showed off a small baby bump under a maroon Seraphine coat by European designer
Cecile Reinaud. Her husband looked snappy in a dark suit.
“It’s good to be here,” William said.
The Empire State Building was lit up in red, white and blue — the
colors of the British Union Jack — in honor of the prominent visitors from
America’s original motherland.
The front of the Carlyle also reflected the subtle transatlantic
battle, with the Brit flag flying next to our Stars and Stripes.
