Melanie Brown's marks were from a hospital IV and not husband Stephen Belafonte, a source close to the former Spice Girl said in the latest twist to the week-long medical mystery surrounding the couple.
The revelation came after accusations raged on social media when Mel B appeared - apparently scratched and bruised - during Sunday's live finale of "The X Factor UK."
Fuelling the speculation was Mel B's three-day hospital stay last week
with a mystery illness, which forced her to miss Saturday's show.
But her scary ordeal has nothing to do with domestic violence in the
reportedly rocky seven-year marriage between Belafonte and Brown, the
source said.
"That is categorically untrue," a source close to Mel B told Britain's Daily Mirror.
TV viewers went wild after the 39-year-old singer appeared to have marks on her shoulders and right arm and a puffy face.
"The marks on her arm were doubtless because of the drip inserted into her arm when she was in hospital," the source told the Mirror. "There definitely wasn't any bruising to her face."
But the accusations were stinging enough that even the Los Angeles-born Belafonte, 39, was forced to respond to them directly.
Making matters worse, Mel B wasn't wearing her wedding ring.
"I don't usually respond to Twitter msgs but I will respond to comments
of hitting my wife which I think are quite disgusting un true!" he tweeted Monday.
Then Belafonte, a director and producer, tweeted: "Mel was very ill a bunch of doctors helped her get better if fans can't just relax B4 being negative they r not real fans of @OfficialMelB."
The couple has a daughter and posed for cover the of Hello! Magazine just last week.
