Hundreds of NYPD officers joined the families of Wenjian Liu and Rafael
Ramos in an emotional Mass held Sunday in Brooklyn to commemorate the
two fallen officers.
“My brothers and sisters, Detective Liu and Detective Ramos are
martyrs,” Msgr. David Cassato told the packed congregation at St.
Athanasius Church in Mapleton. “Today we come to remember them.”
Liu and partner Ramos were gunned down by Ismaaiyl Brinsley while
sitting in their patrol car outside the Tompkins Houses in
Bedford-Stuyvesant on Dec. 20. They were promoted to detective
posthumously.
New Yorkers have opened their hearts and wallets for the families at
the center of the tragedy, donating more than $640,000 to a Daily News
fund. Every cent raised will go directly to the families.
At Sunday’s Mass, the crowd gave the families a standing ovation.
“We are here to show them that the support will continue,” said a uniformed officer who declined to give his name.
Liu’s mother wore an NYPD shirt and joined the other relatives in
waving back at the congregation for their support. The two men’s widows
were not present.
