The woman who stood up to Shape magazine for not running a picture of
her in a bikini has finally gotten her photo shoot.
Brooke Birmingham appears bikini-clad in the January/February issue of
the mag, after a battle that began brewing in May.
Last year, Shape asked Birmingham to be in its Success Stories column,
which is about people who have lost significant amounts of weight. She sent
them a photograph of her in a bikini, which showed extra skin around her middle
that resulted from her having lost 172 pounds.
Shape asked Birmingham for a picture of her with a shirt on, claiming
it was editorial policy. But Birmingham fought back, saying that other people
in the Success Stories column have posed in bikinis. She then withdrew her
participation.
One week later, Shape editor Bahar Takhtehchian appeared on
"Today" with Birmingham to chat about body image - and to announce
that Birmingham would be featured in the magazine in an upcoming issue.
That issue is now on stands.
In the picture, Birmingham wears a blue and white polka dot bikini— and
a proud look on her face.
"It's completely amazing. There's no other word that I can
describe it," she said Tuesday on "Today." "It's more than I thought it would
be."
She's featured in a roundtable discussion in the mag about life after
mega weight loss. Shape launched a new section of its website, called Journey After the Journey,
for people who have lost significant amounts of weight.
"We are so thankful that Brooke helped to kickstart this important
conversation about what happens when you lose a lot of weight, because it's
something we don't typically talk about in the media or in general,"
Takhtehchian told "Today."
