Bow down to Disney’s new queen.
Peyton List is poised to dominate the magic kingdom this year as she
wraps up four seasons on the hit “Jessie,” where the model/actress has
become a household name by playing the oldest of three kids tended by
the titular nanny.
But with a new movie and an album also in the works, List is ready to
show the rest of the world what the PG-set has known for years: that the
talented 17-year-old stunner is a force to be reckoned with, and her
“Pey Day” has come.
“I like that becoming famous hasn’t happened overnight,” says the
grounded List, who caught the acting bug after seeing “Wicked” on
Broadway when she was 6. “It happens so quickly for some people, and I
feel like that’s really difficult. My success has happened inch by inch,
and I’m happy. I just want to take things slower.”
Good luck with that! List’s career is about to speed into overdrive.
The Brooklyn-born star is bringing her beloved, fashion-obsessed
character Emma to a “Jessie” spinoff that begins shooting this spring —
just before her new movie “The Outskirts” hits theaters in June.
“Everyone is going to be really surprised to see me in this role,” she
says of her mean-girl character. “But there have been people in my life
that have been awful. Middle school was just like, whooo. So I pulled
from them for my character, and I had a lot of fun with it.”
That same month, List also will share Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre stage
with indie singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, before laying the
groundwork for her own album.“It’s insane,” she says. “I used to be the
one watching Disney Channel, and my mom would be like, ‘Stop watching TV
and go outside! Or go audition for a show.’”
Her mother, Suzanne List, a former model, has supported her daughter
and her twin brother, Spencer, as they did scores of modeling shoots
while growing up in Red Hook, before List landed the role of the young
version of Katherine Heigl’s character in the 2008 flick “27 Dresses.”
“I miss a lot of things about Brooklyn,” says List, who recalls playing
hide-and-seek in the then-newly opened Ikea, getting chocolate cloud
cookies at Baked and eating pizza at Lucali. “I’m still really close
with my Brooklyn friends, and we FaceTime all the time.”
Then List scored the role of the love interest in the “Diary of a Wimpy
Kid” sequel when she was 11, and at 12 she was cast in “Jessie.” And
the latest in a line of squeaky-clean Disney starlets was born.
“She just had to pay her dues,” says her mom, who moved the family to
Los Angeles so her daughter could film “Jessie” full-time.
But the family doesn’t let fame go to the starlet’s head. It’s hard to
be a diva in a full house packed with five people (including her mother,
her father, her twin and their 10-year-old brother), two dogs, a bunny
and a guinea pig.
“They definitely keep me grounded,” says List. “When I go home, it’s
like I’m nobody. I’m just regular old Peyton. I have to make my bed, and
walk my dog, and clean the rabbit cage. And then when I go out it’s
like, ‘Oh yeah! I’m on a show.’ ”
But she is taking advantage of her A-list status when she can — like
meeting Katy Perry in the exclusive Coachella artists lounge, dancing
next to Rihanna and seeing that famed Madonna-Drake lip-lock in the
flesh.
“I watched the whole thing go down, and he was like, ‘Girl, be
careful,’ because [Madonna] looked like she was about to chair-dance
with him, and didn’t she just fall?”
Her mother still gushes about their close encounter with the First
Family at the White House last Easter. “Meeting the Obamas, that was
surreal,” says Suzanne List. “They were so lovely. They were so sweet. I
don’t care whether you’re a Republican or whether you’re a Democrat —
to meet the President is amazing.”
The bubbly blond takes her role model status for her young fans
seriously, including 3 million followers on Instagram and another
million on Twitter. When “Peytonators” stop her on the street, she plays
the part of the PG-rated ingenue perfectly — such as when an Alabama
family rushed her on the FDR Drive during the Macy’s Fourth of July
Fireworks last year.
“These little kids were screaming, ‘We found her!’ Because they think I
really live in the ‘Jessie’ penthouse on the Upper East Side. They
spent their trip to the city on this scavenger hunt looking for me,”
says List.
“I played along, like, ‘Oh my gosh! You found me,’ ” she says. “I just
have fun with it because they’re so young, and you don’t want to ruin
the magic.”
She learned an important lesson from her Disney predecessors Miley
Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears – namely, not to be like Miley
Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears.
“Learning what not to do in this business is a lot easier than learning
what to do — and right now, I’m definitely not ready to go out and
party,” she says.
So at the Coachella music festival earlier this month, List and friends
stayed out of trouble as Kendall Jenner and Justin Bieber were getting
booted from parties.
“Everyone’s high at Coachella, and I’m, like, the only one that’s
basically stable,” laughs List. “I was the nerd putting on sunscreen in
the front row. I was making my brother put on a ton, too.”
List would rather emulate child stars who graduated to adult roles with
grace, such as “Lizzie McGuire’s” Hilary Duff, seen now in the Darren
Star series “Younger.”
“I definitely idolized Hilary Duff and Raven-Symoné when I was
younger,” says List. “Someone was telling me that (Raven-Symoné) knew
everyone’s name on set, and was always so friendly, and I really admire
that.”
But List is determined to chart her own course. Besides her musical
aspirations, she’s also interested in pursuing a career in fashion. She
says if she wasn’t an actress, she’d love to work at a fashion
magazine, or design her own line.
“Everyone asks me which Disney girl do you think you can identify with.
And I’m not trying to be one of them. I’m not trying to be the next
Hilary Duff,” she says.
“I’m just doing my own thing and taking my own risks,” she adds. “And
if I want to go to Coachella, I’ll go to Coachella, even though people
think I’m too young. Whatever, I’ll just beat to my own drum.”
