King passed away on Wednesday morning after suffering a
heart attack, a club statement revealed.
A midfielder, King became a hugely popular figure at
Goodison Park after arriving from his hometown club Luton in 1976.
He is best remembered for his spectacular strike against Liverpool in October 1978, which earned Everton a
first victory over their Merseyside rivals in seven years.
He left the club in 1980 and spent brief spells at Queens Park Rangers
and West Brom but rejoined the Toffees two years later.
King went on to play for another two seasons at Goodison
Park, taking his tally of appearances for the club to 248.
Stints in Ireland, Holland and Sweden followed before he
hung up his boots in 1987.
"Everton Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of
the passing of our former midfielder Andy King," read a club statement.
"The thoughts of everyone at Everton are with Andy’s
family and many friends at this sad time."
