‘I hope Lampard can come back and get that send off!’ –
John Terry believes Chelsea’s record goalscorer Frank Lampard deserves a tribute from the club,
as the Blues legend prepares to finally complete a move to the MLS.
Chelsea wrapped up their Premier League title win with a 3-1
victory on Sunday, a game which saw departing hero Didier Drogba carried off the pitch on
the shoulders on his team-mates when he was substituted after 30
minutes at Stamford Bridge.
It was a fitting send off for the 37-year-old striker, and
Terry hopes former team-mate Lampard will one day receive the same gesture,
despite having his reputation as a Chelsea legend sullied by agreeing a short-term
move to title rivals Manchester City
last summer.
"I hope one day Lamps can come back and get that send
off," Terry said of the midfielder, who spent a glittering 13 years at
Stamford Bridge before agreeing a move to MLS outfit New York City.
"What they [Lampard and Drogba] achieved day-in,
day-out, year after year, was an example to everyone.
"They've set the base and the foundation for everyone
to build upon.
"What amazes me with those two is they've won
everything and still the next season they're hungry to win more. That's why
they're the best."
Terry played every minute of every Premier League game
this season, becoming the first outfield player to do so for a
championship-winning side since Manchester United's Gary Pallister in 1992/93, as he collected his fourth
top flight title and first since 2009/10.
"It's been a long five years," added the
34-year-old, who signed a 12-month contract extension in March.
"When you get to my age you realise these moments and
these days won't be around forever.
"Let's make sure it's not another five before we win it
again. Let's hope I can stay for a long time and be part of this great
team."
