Danny Cipriani’s World Cup hopes could be in the balance
after the fly-half was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
The 27-year-old Sale Sharks ace was breath tested and taken
to a west London police station after a minor car collision in the Chelsea area of west London shortly after 5am on
Monday morning.
Cipriani, who escaped injury from the accident, was later
released on police bail.
A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police
were called at approximately 5.15am on Monday, 1 June to reports of two cars in
collision in Imperial Road, SW6. No reports of any injuries.
"The cars involved were a silver Toyota Prius and a
black Mercedes C63. The driver of the Mercedes, a 27-year-old man, was arrested
on suspicion of drink driving.
"He was taken to a west London police station where he
was later released on police bail. Return date to be confirmed."
The incident came just a day after Cipriani had starred in England’s 73-12 demolition of the
Barbarians at Twickenham.
It could now affect his chances of making Stuart Lancaster’s
final England squad for the World Cup.
He is in the initial 50-man training party, but Lancaster is
likely to come down hard on Cipriani if the police take further action.
Lancaster has established a reputation for being a
disciplinarian and has already ruled Manu Tuilagi and Dylan Hartley out of World Cup contention.
