The National Biotechnology Development
Agency (NABDA) is ready to intensify efforts to ensure food security in
Nigeria, the Director of Environment and Bioconservation in the Agency,
Gloria Obioh, said on Thursday in Abuja.
According to her, the agency is ready to
employ biotechnology to boost the quality and quantity of agricultural
produce and to increase local materials for many industries.
Obioh said the agency was also working
to ensure environmental sustainability through its laudable projects on
preservation of plants and animals.
“We have to optimise our methods,
systems, activities and endeavours to ensure ecosystem resilience and
sustainability; these include all the components of ecosystem
environment both living and not living.
“As biotechnologists, we try and ensure
that the plants and animals that make up our ecosystem are preserved,
conserved and maintained in the right places and at the right numbers.’’
She noted that many of the vulnerable
species were going extinct due to human activities and urged Nigerians
to start think of reducing, re-using and recycling materials to
collectively contribute to environmental sustainability.
“There are global environmental
challenges, particularly climate change in addition to a population that
is accelerating,’’ she added.
