"Orange Is the New Black" star Laura Prepon says she is able to handle
the pressures of showbiz without breaking a sweat because she is a
"thetan" -- a spiritual being attached to her own body that may be an
outer space alien.
Which is to say, Prepon is big into Scientology.
So much so that she was on the cover of the recent issue of "Celebrity
Magazine," a magazine made by and for members of America's most
controversial religion.
“When you really cognate that you are a thetan and you have a mind and
body, and that the MEST universe does not control you - it puts things
into perspective," Prepon is quoted as saying in the interview. "It
takes the weight off you and things become very easy."
"MEST" is short for matter, energy, space and time. Scenitology teaches
that this MEST universe keeps a thetan trapped and limited. The purpose
of the church's rituals are to liberate the thetan from the MEST. This
is largely done through "auditing," a kind of thetan therapy session.
In her interview, Prepon, a 35-year-old New Jersey native, goes on to
talk about how much the process of auditing has helped her in her career
and life.
"Things don't bother me that had before," she says. "I remember I was
doing a show with an amazing actor, and we were waiting to hear the fate
of our show. He turned to me one day and asked, 'How are you always so
relaxed? Nothing seems to bother you. I want to know what you are
doing...' I take that as such a compliment and testament to the auditing
I have done."
Like fellow high-profile Scientologists Tom Cruise and John Travolta,
Prepon isn’t very vocal in mainstream interviews about her beliefs.
The magazine interview, however, was made public on the Instagram fan page @laurapreponpow.
Prepon has been a Scientologist since 1999. Last year she had to defend
herself against rumors that the church disapproved of her playing a
lesbian character on "Orange is the New Black.
"
"I've never come across any piece of information that remotely is
negative or derogatory towards the LGBT community in any way," she said.
"I'm an actress and rumors get thrown around and it's part of my job
and I have to deal with it."
