The Borno State Government has purchased
a recycling plant that could convert polythene wastes into positive
use, Alhaji Nasiru Surundi, the Coordinator of the Borno State
Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA), said in Maiduguri, on Tuesday.
Surundi said that the decision was
imperative as thousands of tons of waste were being generated by the
increased population without a dump site to keep them.

“In the absence of an approved dump
site, the recycling machine will come handy in ensuring that the streets
of Maiduguri will no longer be littered with heaps of garbage that have
continued to constitute environmental nuisance.’’
Surundi attributed the annual flooding in most parts of Maiduguri to the wrong attitude of people toward waste management.
He said that unless the residents imbibe
a positive attitudinal change toward waste disposal and its management,
they would always be prone to floods devastating their homes annually.
“People have I-don’t-care attitude
toward waste disposal in this town and for as long as they have
concluded that the gutters are the right places to dump their wastes, we
will be experiencing floods whenever it rains.
“BOSEPA has been doing massive
fumigation of primary and secondary schools where some internally
displaced persons ( IDPs) reside so as to prevent them from been
infected by cholera, malaria and typhoid fever.
“We have equally extended that to all the IDP camps in the town,” he said.(NAN)
