The winger has been on United's radar for some years
now after five impressive seasons at Benfica, who he joined from Boca Juniors.
Liverpool have also expressed an interest in the 27-year-old
Argentina international but the two Premier League
giants almost missed out as Dubai-based Al-Ahli made their move.
It was reported that the UAE Pro-League side offered Gaitan
a bumper contract to move to the middle east and he was tempted at first.
But United and Liverpool could yet move for him before the
window shuts after he decided to turn down the offer and wait for one of
Europe's big clubs to join the race.
As well as the two Premier League rivals, Atletico Madrid and Valencia also remain in the
hunt.
