Tragedy was averted at the weekend as the Maitama-Abuja private
residence of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, was partially destroyed by
fire.
Eyewitnesses say the incident started from an air conditioner at the
gymnasium section of his private residence at Number 48, Lake Chad Crescent,
Maitama.
However, Saraki was not at home when the incident started as he was
already playing host to a delegation from the Emir of Kano, Lamido Muhammad
Sanusi II at the New Senate Building.
No casualty was recorded, as operatives of the Nigeria Fire Service were
immediately deployed to the scene to put the fire under control.
Since his election as Senate President on June 9, Saraki has been
residing at his private apartment, as the N27.1bn official homes being built
for National Assembly’s Principal Officers are still under construction.
The proposed official residence is located within the premises of the
National Assembly Complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja.
The former multi-million naira official residence of the Senate
President and those of other Principal Officers at Apo Legislators’ Quarters
was sold in 2010 at give-away prices by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo
administration under the monetisation programme.
Former Senate President, David Mark; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; former
Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and his deputy, Usman
Nafada, had in 2010, bought their official homes.
