Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has told talkSPORT Emmanuel Adebayor has ‘no chance’ of playing this
season after his demands of a £5million pay-off scuppered his chances of
joining West Ham on deadline day.
The Togo international striker reportedly had offers to join
a number of clubs throughout the summer, but looked likely to join the Hammers after a last minute
approach on Tuesday.
Spurs had offered to sever his ties with the club, allowing
Adebayor – who earns £100,000-a-week but is nowhere near the first-team – to
leave as a free agent, but the 31-year-old told Tottenham he’d only
leave if they paid out the remaining 12 months of his contract.
It meant a move across London never materialised, leaving
him to train with the Under-21s until January, and Redknapp - who
brought Adebayor to White Hart Lane during his time as manager - admitted
he was surprised by the striker’s decision.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil
Sports Breakfast, Redknapp said: “You’d think he would have moved
on.
“He’s a talent and you’d think he’d want to go and play…he’s
just sitting around at Spurs.
“They’re obviously arguing over a fair amount of money,
about £5million or £6million, but someone has got to give because Tottenham
have got to keep paying his wages now.
“He’s not even got a squad number, so he’s got no chance of
playing for Spurs this season.
“He would have been better off going somewhere, training
with the kids every day must be soul destroying, but he’s stuck there.”
