Why just drink coffee when you can listen to it, too?
This weekend’s New York Coffee Festival is about more than just coffee
but the broader coffee culture. For three days, java jonesers can focus
as much on atmosphere as they usually do on caffeine.
“This festival is about the discovery and enjoyment of
coffee,” says
founder Jeffrey Young, citing coffee-themed art for sale and
performances by musicians from the Coffee Music Project. “We want to
celebrate the richness of the coffee world and the culture centered
around coffee.”
New Yorkers should be jittery with excitement, given that Gothamites
drink seven times more coffee than residents of slower-moving towns. Yet
most of our coffee is consumed on the go.
As a result, Young and his fellow organizers hope attendees will slow
down and smell the coffee — whether it’s an expertly pulled shot, a
cookbook-cover-worthy cappuccino or even a coffee cocktail.
But most coffeeholics will focus their attention on the festival’s main
events: sessions about the science of coffee, samples of dozens of
varieties, and tips for making the perfect cup at home.
And there’ll also be the annual barista championship, showcasing coffee
artists from here and overseas. Contenders will demonstrate their
brewing technique, latte art, and signature drink.
