The Red Devils have been struck by a mini injury crisis
ahead of their Champions League group game at PSV Eindhoven, with captain Wayne Rooney missing with a hamstring problem.
United have a paucity of striking options in Rooney's
absence after the summer departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, but Young has offered an
alternative to his manager.
"If the manager wants me to play there [up front], then
yes, of course I would," Young said.
"I can play in lots of positions and I have done that
under the manager, whether it is up-front or in midfield.
"Hopefully I can play there [through the middle], but
it's up to the manager and he has to make those decisions.
"I think he does know I've played there. He has said it
to me before, but it is down to him."
Young holds nothing against Van Gaal for keeping him out of
the team for six of the first seven games.
"Every player in the squad wants to be in the starting
XI and I am not different," said Young, who won the free-kick that led to
United's opener against Liverpool.
"I want to play as much as I can, but when I am called
from the bench as I was against Liverpool, I just want to show the manager that
I am ready and willing to give 100 per cent.
"I have always said that it is good to have competition
for places and we have that in abundance in the squad."
