Costa was substituted after just 33 minutes at the Britannia
Stadium, the Spain international clutching his side at he trudged off the
pitch, and was replaced by Loic Remy.
The Frenchman later found the net to level for the Blues
following Joanthan Walters’ earlier opener, though the holders were eventually
knocked out of the fourth round on penalties.
England youngster Jack Butland pulled off the vital save
from Eden Hazard’s spot kick to take the tie 5-4.
Despite another defeat adding to the pressure on the boss,
Mourinho looked to the positives following the game, but had bad news about
Chelsea’s star frontman.
Asked in his post-match press conference what the situation
was with Costa, Mourinho replied: "He is in the hospital - I don't
know."
When then asked if the 27-year-old would be a doubt for
Saturday's Barclays Premier League
home clash with Liverpool, Mourinho said
again: "I don't know."
Costa was substituted shortly after being sandwiched between
Ryan Shawcross and Charlie Adam in a
tackle and then trying to muscle his way towards a Willian cross that Stoke
goalkeeper Jack Butland punched away.
And Mourinho added when asked how the injury had happened:
"I think he punched himself."
