‘The Walking Dead’ star dropped hints about beloved on-screen character’s shocking death in Sunday’s episode

They ate him alive.
Zombies on “The Walking Dead” killed and devoured fan favorite Glenn Rhee in a gut-wrenching, blood-spattering twist Sunday.

Last rites: a major character was killed in Sunday night’s episode of ‘The Walking Dead.’
It was one of the show’s most shocking deaths, even though viewers of AMC’s zombie drama have been expecting the pizza delivery guy-turned-soulful survivor (played by Steven Yeun) to die this season, because that is what happened to the character in the graphic novels the hit series is based on.
In the comics, Glenn is battered to death by a villain named Negan, who brutally pummels him with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. Many fans had assumed Glenn was safe for now because Negan hasn’t appeared on the show yet.

But the showrunners whacked the fan-favorite in a shocking, gory turn, when a horde of zombies disemboweled him in a graphic scene just halfway into the third episode of the sixth season.
Yeun recently hinted to the Daily News that his time this season was short.
“Yes, I’m worried for Glenn,” he said. “But we’ve always told our own story [on the show], and we’ve always told a version that could be the comics - and it could not be the comics. We’ll see.”
He added that he’s incredibly proud of the work he’s done

“How I see it, we’ve made something so incredibly big, and so well received, and something that probably will go down in history as something to be remembered,” he added. “So nah, I’m not scared to be killed off. It’s been six years, and that wears off over time. I just want to tell the best story, whatever that might be, and that’s what I’m in for.”
He had also teased that this season was, “gonna be big, and it’s gonna be massive, and it’s gonna be something you totally don’t suspect.”
He was right.
Glenn was one of the four remaining original Atlanta survivors from “The Walking Dead’s” first season that fans have followed for six years now. He was married to Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and viewers ate their sweet relationship up.
He was on a daring mission with Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and several side characters to save their walled-in Alexandria community from a massive horde of flesh-craving zombies that numbered in the tens of thousands.
While the season premiere saw half of the walkers drawn off course, Glenn and the others split up to race back home before the remaining thousands of zombies arrived.
When Glenn’s team stopped in a deserted town to let the injured members of their party rest, they were overwhelmed by the blood-thirsty horde. He had tried to draw the zombies away by setting a fire on the other side of the town with Nicholas, a character whose cowardice killed several characters last season. He also tried to kill Glenn, but the latter forgave him and took him under his wing.

Glenn had survived a number of close calls in recent episodes. Glenn’s kindness in trying to rehabilitate Nicholas did him in on Sunday. The two men climbed atop a dumpster to escape a sea of zombies in a scene that visually mirrored the end of “The Walking Dead” pilot, when Rick cowered in a tank in Atlanta that was soon surrounded by walkers. In the pilot Glenn reached out to Rick by walkie talkie over the tank’s radio with the famous lines: “Hey dumbass. Yeah, you in the tank. You cozy in there?”

Sunday night’s episode echoed it with Glenn radioing Rick with, “Good luck, dumbass” moments before his suicide mission.
As the zombies swarmed, Nicholas realized there was no chance for them to escape, so he turned to Glenn and said, “Thank you,” before shooting himself in the head. His falling corpse knocked Glenn to the ground, where he screamed in disbelief as zombies began eating him alive.
