Paige Spiranac, the 22-year-old Internet sensation with more than 480,000 Instagram followers, flamed out in the her professional debut at the Dubai Ladies Masters.
Spiranac, best known for a sexy collection of selfies
as well as her ability to hit golf balls backward over her head, shot
77-79-156 missing the cut by a mile and finishing 101st in the
107-player field.
She trailed leader Shanshan Feng (67-67-134) of China by 22 shots.
The result turned her into a crying mess in post-round interviews as well as opening her up to scorn.
Said Spiranac, who was only playing in the event because of a sponsor’s
exemption,: “At the moment, clubs are going in the water. I think I’m
going to go back home and kind of re-evaluate everything and see if golf
is still in my future or not. ... I’m definitely going to not look at
my phone for a while. Probably take a break from social media just to
kind of, like I said, step away and kind of re-evaluate everything.”
Social media pounced after the display hammered Spiranac.
Said @shaunhedger1: That Paige Spiranac is just a new Natalie Gulbis.
But Spiranac did receive supports from one LPGA veteran.
Christina Kim (@TheChristinaKim) tweeted: Hey @PaigeSpiranac keep your
chin up! No one ever said the road to success is easy; the struggles
make the eventual accomplishments sweeter!
And it will be just as sweet to see Spiranac back on the fairways soon.
