'American Sniper' Widow tells President Obama: Gun control won't stop mass shootings

The widow of ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle told President Obama that she does not believe gun control is an effective counter to mass shootings.

Taya Kyle told the president that his proposed changes to the laws would not make people safer because murderers do not have any “moral code”.

 

 

The confrontation came at a CNN town hall broadcast at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Kyle said she did not believe any of the recent mass shootings “would have been stopped by a background check.”

“So I think part it we have to recognize is we cannot outlaw murder, because the people who are murdering are breaking the law, but they also don’t have the moral code that we have.

 

“So they can do the same amount of damage with a pipe bomb. The problem is that they want to murder.”

Kyle said that new laws were not the answer to prevent crime and added: “We want to think we can make a law and people will follow it but by the very nature of their crime they are not following it.”

Instead, Kyle said more should be made of the fact that murder rate is at an all time low in the U.S., and linked that to gun ownership.

In response, the President said he did not believe that higher levels of gun ownership directly related to lower levels of crime.

“The fact of the matter is that violent crime has been steadily declining across America for a pretty long time. And you wouldn’t always know it from watching television,” he said

“Now, I challenge the notion that the reason for that is that there is more gun ownership.

“Because if you look at the where the areas are with the highest gun ownership, those are the places that the crime hasn’t dropped down that much.”

Obama also blamed the NRA for peddling a “conspiracy” that that the federal government wants to seize all firearms.

The NRA had refused to participate in the event, with executive director Chris Cox saying they had only been offered one pre-screened question.
