The hipster music scene is rarely a hotbed of scandal. But the Brooklyn
coterie is being rocked by a series of accusations made by female
musicians against a top publicist.
Confidenti@l broke the news online that Heathcliff Berru stepped down
as CEO of Life or Death PR and Management after a slew of artists spoke
out on social media.
After Amber Coffman, singer and guitarist for veteran Williamsburg band Dirty Projectors,
tweeted Monday night that Berru had “rubbed her ass” at a bar a couple
of years ago, she was joined by a chorus of other artists and industry
figures.
Bethany Cosentino of the band Best Coast responded, saying, “I was too
freaked out to ever say anything. Seriously, he’s not a good person on
any level.”
By Tuesday, Berru — who, as well as a host of indie bands, repped
mainstream acts, including Tyler the Creator and GZA — had resigned.
In a statement from “the rest of Life or Death,” the company said it
has “a zero tolerance policy for the type of conduct alleged in today’s
online postings. We take these allegations very seriously.”
The company added: “We are grateful to Heathcliff Berru for all the
work he’s done to date and his creative vision at the company. We
appreciate and support his decision to step down as CEO of Life or
Death.”
