Linda Perry has apologized for tweeting that Lady Gaga did not co-write "Til It
Happens To You," the Oscar-nominated song from the documentary "The
Hunting Ground."
"My sincere apologies. I made a mistake to comment. I wasn't in the room when the #TIHTY was being written," she tweeted Monday evening.
"More importantly, I wish the focus to remain on the great importance
of the song and the message of the film," she added about the doc, which
focuses on the campus rape epidemic.
Perry issued her mea culpa following an earlier stream of tweets in which
she claimed that Gaga only wrote one line in the nominated song, and
that co-songwriter Diane Warren should have been nominated by herself.
"I have Diane's original demo with her singing. The only line that has
been changed "Till you're at the end, the end of your rope," she began
her Twitter rant, which has since been deleted.
"Originally was "TIL YOU GOT A HOLE RIPPED IN YOUR SOUL". So I guess
technically one line was changed so sure Gaga possibly 'rewrote' a
line."
The 50-year-old songwriter noted that she had no problem with Gaga, but
that it seemed unfair that she should be nominated for a song she
didn’t co-write.
Perry also hypothesized that Diane Warren wanted to ensure as much
promotion as possible for the song, so she enlisted the 29-year-old
superstar.
After the "Beautiful" songwriter's tweets about Gaga made headlines,
Warren took to Twitter to speak out about her writing partnership with
the "Born This Way" singer.
"As Lady Gaga
and I have (consistently) said, Til It Happens To (You) was inspired by
the countless survivors of abuse who need our support and love so they
know they're not alone," she added.
